Star Republican Women (SRW) is an off shoot of an organization born in 1975 when a small group of dedicated Republican women formed the Highland Lakes Republican Women's Club to serve Llano, Burnet, Lampasas, Deer Haven and other communities in that tri-county area. The first meeting was held in Kingsland. Carolyn Knight was elected the first president and Dorothy Crockett wrote the bylaws for the newly formed organization. Soon after, the organization became a part of the Texas and National Federations of Republican Women. Under Carolyn's leadership, the club grew and became an influence in the politics of Llano and Burnet Counties.
Distance was a problem from the start because, even though the meetings were rotated among Llano, Marble Falls, Kingsland and Deer Haven, those from the other areas were not inclined to attend meetings 30 miles away. Still, the club grew and had about 45 members by 1982. The first off shoot of the Highland Lakes Club was the Burnet Republican Women's Club.
In November of 1986, when Dorothy Crockett was District Director of the Texas Federation of Republican Women, some of the women from the south end of Llano County asked her to help organize a new club so the distance to meetings would be more acceptable. The South Llano County Republican Women's Club was then formed. The first official meeting of the group was in January 1987 and its first president, Betty Cross, was elected. In 1996, the word "Club" was dropped from our name, and we became South Llano County Republican Women.
To encourage membership from a larger geographic area, the name was changed to Star Republican Women in 2010. In addition to working for candidates and the Party on the state and national levels, SRW has extended its efforts to help elect Republicans to Llano and Burnet County offices. Our enthusiastic get-out-the-vote efforts have been instrumental in putting Republicans into key offices.
Today, SRW has nearly 200 members and associate members from Llano, Burnet and other area counties. Meetings are held at 12:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of most months at the Quail Point Community Center in the city of Horseshoe Bay, Texas.
